A humble wooden church situated by a small cove, Nakanoura Church is famed for the picturesque view it creates when reflected on the calm waters on a clear day. The Catholics in this area are descended from Hidden Christians of Kurosaki Village in Sotome who moved here in the late 18th century to escape persecution. However, in the mid-19th century, in what is known as “Goto kuzure” (the fall of Goto), residents in this area suffered one of the most intense spate of persecutions. After the ban on Christianity was finally lifted, Christians in this area set out to build “the most beautiful church in Goto”, and in 1925, they completed the church.
