Seibo Kitamura Memorial Hall
Seibo Kitamura is the sculptor of the Peace Monument located in Nagasaki City’s Peace Park. His birthplace displays about 60 pieces of his carvings and calligraphy. In the hall’s garden it is possible to see a replica of the Peace Monument at one-fourth of its original size. -

Akahama Red Beach
Mysterious red sand covers the Akahama coastline, a secluded stretch of coastline on southeast Ojika Island. A once highly-active volcanic island, lapilli and lava periodically spewed into the Sea of Japan, resulting in some of the most fertile soil in the area. Lava containing high levels of iron combined with salt from the sea caused oxidation and thus discoloration. The red sand is caused by hundreds of years of this oxidization process, along with prolonged weathering from the elements. Today, calm waves lap the shore, creating a surreal Mars-like beach landscape. Come see the sight for yourself. Bicycle hire is available at nearby Ojika Port Terminal. -

Takahama Swimming Beach - Goto
Takahama beach boasts some of the whitest sand and clearest water in all of Japan. It is one of the best known beaches of the Goto Islands, attracting holidaymakers from all over the country. The west-facing beach overlooks the Sagano Islands and has a wide sandbar that provides a calm shallow swimming area. Silver sand sparkles through clear water, the surrounding greenery completing the perfect coastal escape. Named among Japan’s top 100 new tourist attractions, top 100 natural beaches and top 88 swimming beaches, Takahama beach is popular with locals and tourists alike. For a view of the beach in its entirety, head to Gyoran Kanon lookout where you can catch a glimpse of the brilliant shades of blue as they change and deepen throughout the day. -

Neshiko Swimming Beach
This slice of paradise features emerald green mountains, white sand and crystal clear water as far as the eye can see. A mere 40-minute drive from Hirado city center, Neshiko beach has been named among the top 88 enjoyable swimming spots in Japan. Stretching 1 kilometer along the Sea of Japan, a wide bay and man-made breakwall ensure calm waters perfect for seaside fun. Beachgoers can enjoy snorkeling, swimming and beach sports or just sit back and work on their tan. Pack a picnic and some cold drinks! The beach’s isolated location ensures a beautiful seaside escape, but unfortunately there are no shops nearby. Bring your own barbeque to sizzle some steaks whilst watching the dramatic sunset. Nearby, the Hirado Kirishitan Museum (切支丹資料館) displays documents and artifacts from the hidden Christian period in Japan. -

Ioujima Swimming Beach - Costa del sol
Located just a twenty minute ferry, or thirty minute bus ride, from Nagasaki city is the beautiful ‘Costa del Sol’ beach or ‘coast of sun’ in Spanish. The beach is named after the brilliant rays of sunshine and crystal clear ocean that makes the area a haven for swimmers. During the summer months, hundreds of beach-goers flock to Ioujima to make the most of the gentle waves and soft golden sand. Children’s paddle pools and play equipment means that the ‘Costa del Sol’ beach is perfect for families, and shark nets ensure a safe swim for everyone. For stronger swimmers, a floating pontoon sits off shore to jump off and relax on. Visit the beachside gazebo to rent an inflatable ring for one or three to lounge around in. Visitors to Costa del Sol can enjoy the never-ending blue skies whilst relaxing in the shade along the 340m beach at the beach house. The Mediterranean inspired awnings and wooden decking seats up to 600 people and is fully equipped with toilets and hot showers, and is wheelchair friendly. Beach entry is free, but use of the beach house incurs charges (see below). Light meals, drinks, barbeque rental and meat platters are available from the stalls adjacent to the main entrance. Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and music as you dig into your kakigori or sizzle some steaks on the barbeque. -

Goto Diving Experiences
The stunning white sand and multicoloured coral reefs of the Goto Islands provide the perfect place to explore some of the best marine environments Nagasaki has to offer. The complex makeup of the islets ensures a variety of diving spots, no matter which island you depart from. Thanks to currents that flow toward Tsushima island in the north, an array of sea animals come and go freely. Local diving companies provide diving packages that cater for beginner to intermediate divers, but, if you’re not keen on taking the plunge, snorkelling and fish-feeding activities are also available. Advanced divers can explore the mystic depths of a 100m shipwreck, the most popular dive in Goto. The sea surrounding the Goto Islands is home to octopodes, lionfish, anemone and much more. Goto Diving Lagoon is Fukue Island’s main diving organization, while Nice Buddy operates on Shinkamigoto. Swimmers and divers of all skill levels have an opportunity to experience the underwater world. During the summer season, prior reservations are strongly encouraged, as diving can be very popular. The staff have lived on the islands for many years, and are well attuned to all of its lagoons, coves and other great diving spots. Wakimisaki Swimming Beach
Located at the southernmost tip of the Nagasaki peninsula, Wakimisaki beach stretches 2km along the Amakusa-Nada sea. A local windsurfing hotspot, the white sand and calm seas create the perfect conditions to enjoy an array of water sports. At low tide, you can see beach rock, eroded by hundreds of years of pounding waves. This kind of rock, in the amounts seen in Wakimisaki, is extremely rare in Kyushu. The area has therefore been deemed a protected national monument by Nagasaki Prefecture. On a clear day, Hashima Island, known as Gunkanjima (Battleship Island) can be seen from its shores. The sunset here is particularly spectacular, painting the sky with a beautiful array of colours. Ranked within the top 100 beaches in Japan, Wakimisaki beach provides a safe swimming environment and is popular with tourists and locals alike. Right by the bus stop, Community Cafe Ripple provides respite for all weary beach-goers. The cafe proudly serves dishes made with local Nomozaki produce. The fish curry is divine! With live events and art classes for adults, Ripple is surely a compulsory stop for any visit to Wakimisaki beach. Community Cafe Ripple Saved from ruin, this once rundown seaside shack has been transformed into a cozy cafe filled with eclectic trinkets and beautiful homemade decorations for sale. Sit back and enjoy a healthy tea and mouthwateringly delicious meal as you listen to the waves crash upon the shore. Sunset is a particularly special time to visit, with the expansive array of colors providing the perfect backdrop to your meal. You may even be able to spot some sea turtles nesting in the summer months. Community Cafe Ripple is a Nomozaki institution, connecting locals and tourists through delicious food, unforgettable performances and informative workshops. Onsen Alega Another great stopover when in the Nomozaki area is Onsen Alega and its conjoining restaurant. Warm, bicarbonate rich waters will leave your skin healthy and glowing. With calming views of the sea and surrounding vegetation, you can soak in a beautiful natural environment. Tatsunoshima Swimming Beach
Swim on a deserted island at Tatsunoshima, the most northern islet of the Iki Islands. Enjoy a dip in the crystal-clear waters and watch as cobalt blue fish dart around the wharf. The long arched foreshore resembles an archer’s bow, with a wide shallow sand bar that provides the ideal spot for beginner to intermediate swimmers. If you tire of swimming, take a break to stroll around the island and see dramatic cliff faces and the narrow gorge nicknamed ‘Snake Valley’ up close. Tatsunoshima Swimming Beach is only a 5-minute ferry ride from Katsumoto Port, a shuttle running every 30-minutes during summer. Flat bottomed boats ensure a smooth ride to and from the island. Pair your day at the beach with a pleasure boat cruise to learn about the island and its surroundings. -

Miuda Swimming Beach
Selected among the top 100 most beautiful beaches in Japan, the tranquil waters of Miuda Beach will remind you of the beaches of Okinawa or Hawaii. Located in the far north of the island of Tsushima, Miuda Beach is easily accessible by car from the Hitakatsu International and Domestic ferry terminal. In the summer months, Miuda is popular with tourists and locals alike. A spectacular natural beach, Miuda is surrounded by sweeping mountains and has incredibly clear blue waters and white sands. The chance to experience such unspoiled natural beauty is well worth the trip for any visitor to Tsushima. Showers and toilets are available on-site, and during the summer months, there are often vendors selling snacks and drinks. The beach is located close to a variety of other facilities, including the ‘Nagisa no Yu’ hot spring. Accommodation is also close at hand, with the Miuda Campground and the Miuda Pension a short walk away. -

Maehama Swimming Beach
Located at the south eastern tip of Minami Shimabara peninsula, Maehama beach is the perfect spot for some seaside fun. As Mt. Iwato watches over the beach, the surrounding greenery, calm waters and golden sand attract locals and tourists alike. The smooth, wide sandy beach makes for a great spot for gathering shellfish or enjoying a dip in the south-facing ocean. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in marine sports at Marine.a.la.CAVU.festa, located on the beachfront. Give Polynesian stand-up paddleboarding a go or try motorised paragliding, drag-net fishing or snorkelling. Booking three days in advance is recommended to secure your place.
